The read/write speed is very solid. I have had no software compatibility issues, and it's never given me a moment of trouble.
A little bit slow and often stops to buffer while playing a DVD. But you pay for what you get I got it for a very good price so not complaining. Bought this to burn some DVD+DL discs. Had to burn it at the LOWEST speed (3x). Any attempts to burn at any higher speeds FAILED.

It works very well and very fast. Need to back up your system? On dvd it is done very quickly. It is very handy to have and leaves a small foot print. It's nice and clean and gets the job done. I was surprised with the slow copy speeds, however. When copying data from a CD to my computer, I found it took about 2 minutes to copy 100MB of data.

It is also a nice looking drive to have out. And no power cord needed (only USB) makes it very portable and easy to use. The DVD/ROM quit in my old laptop. Got this USB connected one so I didn't have to repair the laptop.
It was old and original parts were rare. This one writes all the different combinations of +- formats!. It only requires 1 USB for both power & data and doesn't need drivers installed once connected. True plug and play for both Windows and Mac OS. I did notice that it's so light that when the tray opens, the unit moves (action - reaction).

I solved that problem by gluing some cork sheeting to the bottom. Tray is a bit flimsy when open (duh) and the eject button takes some reverse pressure applied to the back of the drive to function (the whole thing is so light it just slides until it encounters resistance). If you want to write DVDs or rip CDs, there is free software included that is easy to install & use. Works great. Computer recognized it instantly without a driver.
It reads data as fast as I need, though I have not tried writing to CDs or DVDs. Some people say that it may have less performance this way, but it is still faster than the DVD drive that came with my computer both reading from, and writing onto the disk. Works great for the Surface Pro 4. Plug and play no issues.

Reads discs with no problem and seems durable. It read and writes effortlessly without error and thereby giving the feeling that it is, and always has been, an integral part of the system. The only reason I gave it four stars is that I wish it had a simple LED indcator to let me know when it's functioning.
For a basic DVD player/recorder I expected superior engineering and performance. It is slow and had errors reading and writing my backup DVD+Rs.
I bought and was disappointed when I unpacked it with a USB Y cable. Then I was delighted to see that it worked just fine with a normal USB A-B cable. Then I was disappointed again when I found that ANY disc (CD or DVD) burned without the Y cable did not work.
Windows and OSX reported that it burned successfully, but discs either won't play or sometimes even show up as blank in whatever device I use them. The same USB port on my HP tower works just fine to power and read/write data on my external hard drive, but if I plug in the DVD burner instead I get crap results. The Y cable works just fine, I'd be OK with it at my office, but there is NO way it would work with the MBA USB ports being on opposite sides of the computer. The Y cable is only about 2 feet long and the split part of it can only be separated to span 6-7 inches. I decided to fork out the extra money for the Superdrive and haven't looked back. Even on Windows it works well. I never pay attention to burn times though, so I can't vouch for any speed.

My suggestion then is to go buy one from a local store such as MicroCenter or Best Buy; that way you have someone to go to for an exchange or a refund if it breaks after 50 CDs. For real durability, try to look for the external drives that are based off desktop hardware. They're much bigger: usually 8+ inches long and 2 inches tall; and always require a power adapter. However, because the drives are 5' drives intended for desktop use, they will certainly be more durable than the slim ones based off of laptop drives. Hey everyone, I just wanted to suggest a method that is completely free if you have another computer with a disk drive.

Or you can create disk images on another computer and then put those on a USB, although this method is relatively complicated and time consuming but this method should work for bootcamp. Disclaimer: I am not encouraging the use of illegal file sharing etc. And this method should only be used for software that allows it.
