October 13, 2016 It is not often a person gives up the opportunity of achieving a dream that they have spent months practicing for but that was the case last weekend in Killybegs. Michael Boyle from Lettermacaward, a son of the Harvest Rally winner at the weekend, had been preparing his car for scrutiny on Friday night when the unthinkable happened – his engine blew up. Not only was this the end of a dream to win at home in his own county but the opportunity to secure the national Junior Championship. It was a major blow to this promising young rally driver. Word soon spread around the service area and out of the blue another young rally driver, Cormac Phelan approached Michael. Michael told the Democrat, “It was unbelievable.

He just told me that he had heard about the situation and wanted to give me his engine. “I said no way – I couldn’t deprive anybody of the opportunity of winning but he just insisted. We spent the whole night transferring the engines – as things turned out I crashed out but still secured 2nd place in the national rankings. This gesture is just unprecedented.” Cormac deservedly received a special award when he was awarded the “Spirit of the Rally award.

Words Matt Britton Donegal Democrat. October 11, 2016 What a weekend in the hills of Donegal!!.and weren’t we glad to finish it. The stages last weekend were fast flowing stages. They were tough in places with lots of bumps and crests – you really had to hang on tight at times ha. It took us the first loop of stages to get into the swing of things and settle a bit before we could make any sort of times.

But by the end of the day we had moved up steadily and finished 3rd in class 2 and 74th o/a. Our plan going into the final round in Donegal was to go out, have the craic and bring her home as the National class 2 and Group R title was already ours – an achievement I didn’t believe I would get to be honest. In regards to the whole year, it’s been super!!

I have to say that I am quite proud of how far I’ve come since the first day in Mayo this year. It’s been a great year and the craic has been 90. I have to say though, I owe most the credit to the brave man that sat beside me for most the year and put manners on me ha!! – John McCabe.

He never missed a beat and I hope that we could team up again in the future. Also, my father, the main man that backed me throughout the year. Only for him and his passion for rallying I would be unable to do it myself.

I also owe you a very big thank you to my service crew and friends who’ve shown me their support the whole year, especially Lennon. He never let us down.

Now it’s time to make plans for 2017. Hopefully it’s as good a year as this has been. Who knows what could happen. Watch this space. October 4, 2016 As we roll in to the last round of the Trition Showers National Championship we catch up with the R2 pairing of Jenna McCann And Co-Driver John McCabe.

Read what the pair have to say below We are looking forward to the last round of the Triton National Championship this weekend. So far this year we’ve had a great run and are leading class 2 and group R. Our last round in Clare was tough. Stages were very mucky and tricky.

We thought it was all over on Stage 1 when we lost the car and hit a bank. Thankfully we could still keep going, although losing a few minutes. Our plans for this weekend in Donegal is to keep it steady and get our final finish of the year. It would be a great end to a great year!!!
