Michael Boyle from Lettermacaward, a son of the Harvest Rally winner at the weekend, had been preparing his car for scrutiny on Friday night when the unthinkable happened – his engine blew up. Not only was this the end of a dream to win at home in his own county but the opportunity to secure the national Junior Championship. It was a major blow to this promising young rally driver. Word soon spread around the service area and out of the blue another young rally driver, Cormac Phelan approached Michael. Michael told the Democrat, “It was unbelievable.

He just told me that he had heard about the situation and wanted to give me his engine. “I said no way – I couldn’t deprive anybody of the opportunity of winning but he just insisted. We spent the whole night transferring the engines – as things turned out I crashed out but still secured 2nd place in the national rankings. Words Matt Britton Donegal Democrat. October 11, 2016 What a weekend in the hills of Donegal!!.and weren’t we glad to finish it. The stages last weekend were fast flowing stages. They were tough in places with lots of bumps and crests – you really had to hang on tight at times ha. It took us the first loop of stages to get into the swing of things and settle a bit before we could make any sort of times.

But by the end of the day we had moved up steadily and finished 3rd in class 2 and 74th o/a. Our plan going into the final round in Donegal was to go out, have the craic and bring her home as the National class 2 and Group R title was already ours – an achievement I didn’t believe I would get to be honest. In regards to the whole year, it’s been super!!

I have to say that I am quite proud of how far I’ve come since the first day in Mayo this year. It’s been a great year and the craic has been 90. I have to say though, I owe most the credit to the brave man that sat beside me for most the year and put manners on me ha!! – John McCabe.

He never missed a beat and I hope that we could team up again in the future. Also, my father, the main man that backed me throughout the year. Only for him and his passion for rallying I would be unable to do it myself.
