At NeoCon 2017 Mohawk Group had the honor of launching Lichen, the first flooring product in the industry to achieve Living Product Challenge Petal Certification. This year we’re proud to unveil five more. Not only will these high performance, high design products transform the built environment, but they will also leave a positive handprint on our planet and the people who inhabit it. The Living Product Challenge inspired us to partner with environmentally and socially conscious organizations to ensure a net-positive impact.
To offset the energy used to manufacture these new collections, for example, Mohawk partnered with Groundswell, an organization that champions projects connecting solar power and economic empowerment through energy sharing programs. The collaboration with Groundswell includes the installation of 10 Smart Solar Flowers during the next three years at STEM schools in New York City, Chicago, Eden, NC, Washington DC. And other locations across the U.S.
Each of these five new Mohawk Group products are on track to meet or exceed the requirements for Living Product Challenge Petal Certification, a designation that represents the highest measure of sustainability in product manufacturing today. Nutopia offers carpet planks inspired by the concept of “urban fabric”. Undulating striations give a subtle nod to a city skyline, and the four styles can be used individually or as a cohesive system. Like city life, layouts can be vivid and dramatic or subtle and calm, specified to suit the end user’s culture and brand. Nutopia Matrix presents two urban plank designs with a lower profile in a mix of heathered and solid yarns that emphasize depth of pattern.

The collection features EcoFlex Matrix, Mohawk Group’s newest generation of Red List-free backing, engineered to utilize fewer raw materials and less energy while incorporating at least 40% recycled content. Sunweave Broadloom draws elements of design from the baskets, blankets and textiles woven by women of indigenous cultures around the world. Featuring our new innovative yarn system, Heathered Hues, the broadloom provides natural textures with a variegated wool-like appearance, suitable for biophilic designs. Sunweave Area Rugs, like the broadloom options, feature designs that celebrate nature’s interplay between light and shadow. A large-scale ombre mimics the shifting sun’s effect on color and value. The collection is Red List-free and made from yarn produced without the use of water.
Pivot Point ERT is manufactured using alternative chemistry and is Red List-free. It will be among the first in hard surface flooring to achieve Petal Certification. Inspired by nature, the collection’s wood, textile and natural stone looks coordinate with calming biophilic interiors. Colors and patterns can also be combined for abstract, contemporary designs.
