Sibelius Keypad For Mac
Now this is pretty ingenious. My colleague Gabe Cobas tells me that for iPhone and iPod Touch (available from the for £1.19 here in the UK) works beautifully with Sibelius on Mac OS X 10.5. Recent Apple laptops have done away with the embedded numeric keypad that was previously accessed by holding down the Fn key (or using Num Lock) and typing particular letters on the QWERTY keyboard, which is something of a problem for Sibelius, since it relies so heavily on the numeric keypad for choosing note values, etc. (By the way, if you’re using a Mac without an embedded keypad and don’t have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, fear not: update to Sibelius 5.2.5 and you’ll find that you can choose Notebook (laptop) features on the Menus and Shortcuts page of Preferences, which will allow you to use the number keys on the main keyboard as Keypad keys.) But if you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, you can now use NumberKey. Gabe says: I installed the Numberkey app from the iTunes App Store and tested it with Sibelius. So far so good, and it has all of the functions of a normal number pad. No need to carry an external number pad around anymore!

I haven’t tried this myself yet (I have some stupid problem with my iPhone and my WiFi here at home) but this looks like a winner for owners of recent Mac laptops who want to use Sibelius on the go!
PLease explain what you want to do a bit more clearly. Do you already have the Yamaha?

Do you want to use it as a controller or sound source, or both? E313 is a bit old now, Yamaha are two generations past that.
And it's not a high-spec keyboard with only entry level quality sounds. Not great as a sound source, to be honest. IIRC, it should plug into the Mac via USB, you'll need to install Yamaha's USB-MIDI drivers first, of course.

If it doesn't have USB, but MIDI ports, then you'll need a simple USB-MIDI interface. There are dozens on the market if you google them, but do not buy the cheap, Chinese ones, go for a recognised brand like M-Audio, MIDISport etc. Posts: 1332 Joined: Tue Feb 14, 2006 8:55 pm Location: UK. Hi Andyg, Thanks for your quick reply. I particularly appreciate you mentioning which Midi brands are best.

Yes, I know the keyboard is old technology, but it is what we'll have to use for a while. My son would like to transfer compositions he has stored on the keyboard into Sibelius, and also directly transfer what he plays into notation. He'd also like to know if he can transfer his Trumpet playing into Sibelius (or Garage Band), I suppose by using a mike? Seager Posts: 4 Joined: Sat Jan 21, 2012 10:49 pm.
The Yamaha won't let you transfer its own songs to the computer in this way, I'm afraid. And even if it could, there would be a lot of work tidying it up to make it into readable notation. Probably better to input it normally. As for adding audio, Sibelius is a notation package not a sequencer or DAW, so it's not designed for this. Recording into Garageband should be possible with a suitable mike, and mixer if needed. The Piagerro series is very similar to the current E423 but a bit more advanced, so may be a little more capable.
